Getting started

What to expect at your first therapy session in Laurel, MD

A plain walkthrough of the first appointment at Renewed Minds Therapy Services — paperwork, what we ask, what you can skip, and how long it takes to feel settled.

Most people arrive at a first session with the same quiet worry: what am I supposed to say? You are not expected to have it organized. The first appointment is mostly us listening and learning what brought you in.

Before the appointment

You'll get intake paperwork through the client portal. It covers your contact details, insurance, medical history and consent forms. Filling it out ahead of time means the first session can be spent talking instead of typing.

The first 50 minutes

Your therapist will ask what's happening now, how long it has been going on, and what you have already tried. We'll touch on family, work, sleep, and anything affecting your safety. If a question feels like too much on day one, you can say so — that's a normal and useful thing to say in therapy.

  • What you want to be different in six months
  • What has helped before, even a little
  • How often you'd like to meet

Choosing the right fit

Fit matters more than technique. If you and your therapist aren't clicking after a few sessions, say so — we would rather move you to someone else on the team than have you quietly stop coming.
